I have, over the years, enjoyed working in a variety of media. As a result, this website features work of various materials and techniques, as well as subject matter. This includes the more traditional subjects of landscape, wildlife, and figurative, as well as less traditional 3D/mixed media/assemblage work.

Grand Canyon "Celebration of Art" Sept. 8-15, 2012
"Late in the Day" © Rick Wheeler, 2012
I'm happy to report that I've been invited to participate in the annual Grand Canyon "Celebration of Art" for the 4th year in a row, September 8-15, 2012. The event is a fundraiser for the canyon, which seeks to establish an art venue to display Grand Canyon National Park's and Grand Canyon Association's extensive permanent art collection, which includes a piece of my own. 27 artists will participate, with an art exhibit to be held at the end of the week at Kolb Studio, including studio and plein air work. For more information, please visit www.grandcanyon.org. Image at left: "Late in the Day," scratchboard/watercolor; 18 x 24 in.

Bio, etc.
My formal education included drawing, painting, and illustration classes at both the San Francisco Art Institute (where I was awarded a scholarship) and the San Francisco Academy of Art. I hold an AA degree in Graphic Design and a BA in Fine Art from Prescott College, AZ.

I'm currently a member of Artists for Conservation (www.natureartists.com), the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (www.science-art.com), the New York Society of Illustrators (www.societyillustrators.org), and the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (www.scratchboardsociety.com). My time is divided between gallery work, teaching, and graphic design and illustration projects for clients.

I'm available to teach drawing and painting classes and workshops, both locally and nationally. I currently teach on a regular basis at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum as an instructor with the Art Institute wing of the museum (www.desertmuseum.org). I also hold an ongoing position as a mentor with Prescott College, Tucson, as well as working with several private students. I'm also available for commissions.
